Short answer: to optimize your Google Business Profile, verify it, use your real business name (no extra keywords), choose the most specific primary category, list your services, keep regular and holiday hours accurate, add real photos, post updates, and reply to reviews. Then make sure your website shows the same name, address and phone number and links back to the profile.
The Short Answer
Here's the checklist. Each step is explained below.
- Claim and verify the profile.
- Use your real-world business name.
- Set your address or service area correctly.
- Choose your primary and secondary categories, then add services.
- Add regular hours and special hours for holidays.
- Upload real photos of your business, team and work.
- Post updates and offers.
- Ask for reviews and reply to them.
- Link your website and keep your details consistent.
Why Does My Business Profile Matter?
Your Business Profile is what appears in Google Maps and in the local results on Google Search. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up for relevant searches.
How Do I Claim and Verify My Profile?
Sign in with a Google Account and search for your business on Google or go to Google Business Profile. Then follow the prompts to claim it. Google explains that you need to verify your business to edit its info and interact with customers, and verification gives you ownership of the profile. Google will tell you which verification methods are available for your business.
Tip: use a business-owned Google Account, not a personal one that belongs to an employee, so you never lose access.
What Should My Business Name Be?
Exactly what's on your sign, website and paperwork. Google's guidelines for representing your business say your name should reflect your real-world business name, and that including unnecessary information in the name isn't permitted. "Lake Street Plumbing" is fine. "Lake Street Plumbing - Best Emergency Plumber Minneapolis" breaks the rules and can get your profile suspended.
Should I Show My Address?
- If customers come to you (a shop, office, restaurant or salon), show your address.
- If you go to customers (a plumber, cleaner or mobile groomer), you're a service-area business. Set a service area, and hide your address if you don't serve customers there.
- If you do both, Google calls you a hybrid business. You can show your address and set a service area.
Don't list a virtual office or a remote mailbox. Google's guidelines say P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes aren't acceptable, and a rented mailing address you don't operate from isn't eligible.
How Do I Pick Categories and Services?
Your category tells Google what kind of business you are, which feeds into how relevant you look for a search. Choose the most specific primary category that describes your main business ("Italian restaurant", not just "Restaurant"). Add a few secondary categories only if they're truly accurate.
Then add your services (or menu). Google notes that when customers search for an offering you provide, it may be highlighted on your profile. Use the words customers use, and add short descriptions.
How Do I Keep Hours Accurate?
Set regular hours, then use special hours for holidays and one-off changes. Google recommends confirming your hours for official holidays even when they don't change, so customers know your hours are accurate. Minnesota winters make this extra important: update your profile for weather closures too.
What Should I Post?
Photos: upload real photos of your storefront (so people recognize it), your interior, your team and your work. Skip stock photos.
Posts: use posts for offers, events, new services and seasonal updates. One rule to know: Google may remove posts that include contact information such as phone numbers, email addresses or social handles. Use the built-in Call now button instead, which uses your verified profile phone number (Google posts policy).
Links: depending on your business type, you can add links that let customers book an appointment, make a reservation or place an order.
How Should I Handle Reviews?
Ask every happy customer, using your profile's review link or QR code, and reply to reviews, good and bad. Google says replying shows customers you value their feedback. Never offer discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews. Google's review guidelines prohibit incentives.
How Does My Website Fit In?
Your profile and your website should back each other up:
- Link your profile to your website (or to the specific location page if you have several locations).
- Show the exact same business name, address and phone number on your site, ideally in the footer of every page.
- Have a page for each main service, with the same service names you use on your profile.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data to your site.
