The Project
The project is a website for Reed & Roller, a house-painting company in Nokomis. People looking for a painter usually want three things before they call: which neighborhoods you cover, whether you do their kind of job, and how to get an estimate. They ask those questions at night, on a phone, often while standing in the room they want painted.
A chat assistant is a good fit for that, if it stays inside facts the office has approved. It can answer the neighborhood and service questions, and it can book an estimate visit. A price, a start date, or a question about permits is a different kind of conversation, and that one belongs to a painter.
For a wider look at where this kind of help is useful and where a person should stay in the loop, see How Small Businesses Can Use AI.
The Goals
- Answer the questions that come in every week. Neighborhoods, services, hours, and how to book, from an assistant that only uses an approved FAQ.
- Book the estimate, and hand off the rest. The assistant can schedule a visit or pass the person to a painter. It does not invent a price.
- Start the quote with a clear scope. A short intake form drafts a scope for the office. A painter reviews it before anyone replies.
- Give search tools the same facts as the page. HousePainter, Service, and FAQ markup match the copy and the answers the assistant is allowed to give.
- Keep the office in control. Approved answers live in a CMS, drafts wait for a person, and chats are logged so the FAQ can be corrected.
Package Fit
Package: AI Assistant, $3,500.
The assistant is only as careful as the answers it is allowed to use, and those answers change with the season and the schedule. This package includes a chat trained on the business's services, FAQs and pricing, appointment booking and lead capture with a handoff to a person, quote and intake forms, structured data for AI search, privacy guardrails, staff review of answers, and 30 days of tuning after launch. The office edits the approved FAQ, reviews estimate drafts, and reads the log. A smaller template package would launch a homepage, but it would not include that assistant or the review step.

Design Approach
Colors: Chalk (#F4F0E6) for the page and card white (#FFFCF7) for the header and the chat. Ink (#1C2421) for text. Three paint chips do the rest of the work: fern (#1E4D3C) for interior, the estimate band, and the booking button; sand (#E4C98A) for exterior and the review button; brick (#6E2E28) for cabinets. White text sits only on fern and brick. Mist (#E5EFE8) is the assistant's message. Body text stays ink on chalk, card, sand, or mist.
Type: Syne for the wordmark and the headlines. Outfit at 18px for body copy, and 16px in the chat and on form labels.
Layout: The header is a three-bar swatch, the wordmark, text links, and a fern "Book an estimate" pill. The hero is two columns. "Color, room by room." sits on the left. On the right, a chat card shows one exchange, then "Book an estimate" and "Talk to a painter," with a line that a person reads anything sent and that the assistant does not quote a price. Below, three full-width slabs name interior, exterior, and cabinets. An "Ask" band splits into what the assistant may answer and what goes to a painter. The estimate form sits on a fern panel: the draft and the privacy note on one side, the fields on the other. On a phone, the headline and the chat fit on the first screen, and a bar at the bottom keeps "Ask" and "Book an estimate" in reach.
Imagery: No photograph. The page is type, the three chips, and the chat.

What We Built
- Mobile-first layout: On a phone, the headline, the chat, and a way to book are on the first screen. "Ask" and "Book an estimate" stay pinned while the page scrolls.
- FAQ assistant, with a handoff: The chat answers only from the approved FAQ: neighborhoods, interior / exterior / cabinets, hours, what a standard prep includes, and how to book. Each reply offers two next steps, "Book an estimate" and "Talk to a painter." If the question is outside the list, the assistant says so and hands the conversation to a person. It does not guess.
- Scoped answers: The assistant will not quote a price, promise a start date, or give legal advice about permits, lead paint, or contracts. Those go to a painter. The "Ask" band on the page states that split in plain language, so a visitor can see it before they type.
- Estimate intake that drafts a scope: Name, phone, neighborhood, project type, size, and timing. From those fields the office gets a draft, for example "Interior, two rooms, Nokomis. Prep included. Cabinets not in this request." The draft is labeled for staff review. It is not a price.
- Privacy on the form and in the prompt: The form collects a name, a phone number, a neighborhood, and the job. It asks for no payment card and no photos of documents. The assistant's prompt is the visitor's question plus the approved FAQ, not the customer list and not past jobs.
- Staff review before anything goes out: Estimate drafts wait in the CMS. A painter or the office approves a draft before a reply is sent. An answer the assistant is not sure of becomes a handoff, not a message to the customer.
- A log the office can read: Each chat, handoff, and draft is stored with the time and which approved answer it used. When a log shows a question the FAQ does not cover, the office updates the FAQ. The log is for the business. It is not published on the site.
- Structured data that matches the page:
HousePainter, the most specific schema.org LocalBusiness subtype for this trade, plus aServicefor interior, exterior, and cabinet painting, plus anFAQPagewhose questions are the same ones the assistant is allowed to answer. Visible copy, the FAQ, and the markup name the same neighborhoods, services, and hours. That is what makes the site readable to AI search tools: they can quote the page instead of inventing a service area or a price. The same idea is covered in How Small Businesses Can Use AI. - Analytics and sitemap: Google Analytics with events for estimate submits, chat handoffs, and call taps, plus an XML sitemap.
Here is the kind of structured data the site ships with. The address is Minneapolis, Minnesota. Hours and the final URL are filled in at launch.

Process Timeline
Here's a typical schedule for a build this size. Your quote confirms the real timeline.
- Week 1: brainstorm, sitemap, and the answer list. A 1-hour brainstorm covers services, neighborhoods, and the questions the office answers every week. We write the approved FAQ and the list of topics that always go to a person, then map the pages and the URLs.
- Week 2: mock-ups. Desktop and mobile mock-ups of the homepage, the chat, and the estimate intake, with revision rounds until the direction is locked.
- Weeks 3 and 4: development and CMS. We build the templates, the service pages, the assistant, the intake form, and the CMS queue where drafts wait for review.
- Week 5: schema, logging, and testing. Titles, meta descriptions, HousePainter, Service, and FAQ markup, the sitemap, and analytics events. We test the assistant against the approved FAQ, including questions it should refuse, and we check the log. Then testing across browsers and phones.
- Week 6: launch. Launch, Search Console submission, and a walkthrough of the FAQ, the review queue, and the log.
What It's Designed to Drive
- Estimate requests that start with a scope. The form is designed to collect the job, not a payment, and to hold the draft until a person has read it.
- Answers after hours, with a person still available. Common questions are designed to be answered from the FAQ. Everything else is designed to reach a painter.
- One set of facts. The page, the assistant, and the structured data are designed to name the same services, neighborhoods, and hours.
- A FAQ that can be corrected. The log is there so the office can see what people asked and update the approved answers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much does a website for a painting company cost with Strategic Solutions? A: A site with an assistant, intake, and a review step, like this one, fits our $3,500 AI Assistant package. Smaller shops that need a fast, professional site can start with the $1,000 Local Small Business package or the $2,200 Website in a Week package.
Q: Can the assistant quote a price? A: No. It can book an estimate visit or hand the question to a painter. A price goes out only after a person reviews the draft.
Q: What information does the chat collect? A: The form asks for a name, a phone number, a neighborhood, and the job. It does not ask for a payment card. Chats, handoffs, and drafts are logged for the office, with the time and the approved answer that was used.
